One of these would undoubtedly have to be snorkelling and diving with whale sharks in the crystal clear waters of Belize. The location not only boasts incredible untouched reefs and powdery white beaches, but is also home to the annual whale shark migration in which these graceful giants converge in one location during the spring full moons. Does this sound too good to be true?
Well, it’s not! The Whale Shark Migration and Flotilla is happening for the first time ever in May 2016 in Placencia, located in the Stann Creek district of Belize. The week will include a variety of yachts, chartering as a Flotilla – with groups of families and friends sailing and enjoying leisure time together under the Central American sun. Demian Chapman, Global Finprint’s extremely experienced lead scientist, will be onboard one of the yachts, as well as a dive master. They will inform, guide and interact with you on this educational and incredible experience as you mingle with these gentle giants in their natural habitat.
The itinerary will include the Silk Cayes, three offshore atolls and Gladden Marine Reserve, which is often frequented by whale sharks and also home to the longest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere. The migration may lead to a full plethora of ocean wildlife viewing, as the spawn released by the ample reef fish, which the whale sharks feed on, attracts predatory sharks which in turn feed on the spawning fish. Other activities on this charter can include guided fishing trips, horseback riding, cave and ruin exploring and Jaguar and Monkey River tours.
What better way to tick off one’s bucket list, explore a new country and protect the environment all at the same time.
